Kids will love: Storm Chasers! On the Trail of Twisters!

After my trip back from storm chasing two weeks ago in Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas, my 8 year old daughter  and 5 year old son have been very eager to hear more about my experiences and to learn why I would actually participate in storm chasing.

Living here in Minnesota presents its own set of weather situations and over the course of several years, a few experiences in the region have elevated the anxiety and fear of storms in general for them.

Usually I try to reassure them when a storm is active around us with sound educational assurance that they are fine and these events happen all over the world. One thing that I have learned, especially with my daughter, is that  nothing beats having her read an interesting science book, especially if it is written with a kid emphasis. The connection is invaluable.

Therefore, I was happy to hear that John Davies has written a book entitled Storm Chasers! On the Trail of Twisters. I have already placed my order and could not have been more thrilled!

Jon Davies is a private meteorologist now living in the Kansas City area, where he recently moved from Wichita, Kansas.  He focuses on practical operational research concerning severe weather and tornado forecasting.  Jon has published several papers in professional meteorological publications.  He graduated from the University of Kansas in 1980, and has worked as a broadcast meteorologist and forecaster for several television stations and private weather consulting firms.  He also worked at the Weather Channel in the 1980’s.

Jon’s interest in severe weather began while he was growing up in Pratt, Kansas, where he witnessed his first tornado at age 9.  He continues to enjoy storm chasing and storm spotting as a serious hobby and educational activity.

You can visit Jon’s website  or his blog to see his weather-related photos, case studies and papers about severe weather!

    Kathleen,

In reply to your comments on a blog entry I made of John Davie’s book entitled Storm Chasers! On the Trail of Twisters! back on May 12th, I would first like to say that I believe you had intended it for John Davies. If so, I would be happy to somehow relay it John himself. Nevertheless, I was struck by your amazing experiences myself.

Living in Minneapolis, I am by trade an advertising photographer that specializes in children, animals and product photography. Some of my clients included Target, Kohl’s, Warner Brothers, etc. Recently, I have taken an interest in storm chasing. This year was one of my first fully committed adventures. I must say that even though I am trying to capture the beauty of storms, I have been struck by the emotional and physical scar that these storms have left on communities through out the tornado alley. Always one for social interaction and commentary through my personal photography projects, I am amazed that your story had not been captured or embraced by others yet.

Therefore, I will leave you with some insight and hope that if you choose to pursue this avenue, then maybe I somehow could be of assistance. Storm chasing today as a business seems a little overrated and I cannot let go of the fact that these storms that inspire so many have not been addressed on another note. Very little is paid attention to in the programs. Your story may be a chance for all to take seriously and acknowledge and respect the power of such storms in the heartland.

    Take care.
